Second, I used to worry and think that I had to have some grand moment placed before me before it was worthy of a picture. I would wait and wait for those moments. I became extremely discouraged when I found that they weren’t very frequent nor did my life seem as exciting as other people’s lives around me. It took some time, but I figured it out. Small moments were what memory keeping was about, not just those big moments that only happen every so often. Every small moment can be breathtakingly beautiful. We just have to have eyes to see it.
Finally, it should be noted that small moments are plentiful. We can ALL have them. They are everywhere. It just takes an eye to recognize them. I started taking photos of everything around me when I first started out in photography. Every flower was a masterpiece, every cloud and sunset became my focus of interest. And those were the days when I still used film! Thankfully, in the digital age, we don’t need to worry about wasting film anymore. We can take 50 photos just to get one good one and keep just the one (or two or ten) that we like most. And, yes. It takes about 25 pictures just to get one or two good ones! That’s something that most people don’t tell you on Instagram!
I love photography as a way of journaling and memory keeping. It has become a dear friend in that regard. I take my camera phone everywhere with me so that I can capture even the smallest moments. Hopefully you will find joy in the small moments, too!
Happy journaling!
